Defenceman Tyler Kleven, the latest top prospect from the University of North Dakota, joins the Senators on a three\u002Dyear entry\u002Dlevel deal
Kleven, 21, was originally drafted 44overall by the Senators in the 2020 NHL draft. He scored eight goals and 10 assists in his third season at North Dakota, but it’s his heavy hitting and physical game that separates him from the pack of other top NCAA defencemen. In his time at the school, he played with fellow Senators defencemen Jake Sanderson and Jacob Bernard-Docker, along with centre Shane Pinto.
The Senators were originally hopeful that Kleven would have joined the organization after the 2021-22 season, but Dorion says the extra year at school has furthered his development. “He has taken on being the number one or number two defenceman at North Dakota, playing in all situations,” said Dorion. “Certain players mature at certain times and I think this year, as much as we wanted to sign him , I think it was probably the best thing for him huge minutes, which he did this year.
Chabot, Chychrun, Brannstrom and Sanderson have all showcased the ability to create odd man rushes by joining the play.
