Warning over 'toxic mould' scammers targeting households after Awaab Ishak death
Households have been warned not to let 'toxic mould' scammers into their homes following the tragic death in Rochdale of two-year-old toddler Awaab Ishak.
Awaab, who lived with his parents in a flat on Rochdale's Freehold estate, died in December 2020, just days after his second birthday, following prolonged exposure to mould and damp. His parents, a coroner said at an inquest into his death, had repeatedly raised their concerns about the state of their home with landlord, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing , but nothing was done.
They have charged excessive amounts – often several thousands of pounds – for poor quality and unnecessary work, which in some cases has been found to affect the mortgage-ability of the property. "By cashing in on people’s legitimate concerns about mould and energy efficiency, scammers continue to plumb the depths of cynicism. They are exploiting elderly residents, parents, and anybody they think they can trick into handing over money under false pretences.
