A Warner Beach resident was caught in the crossfire of a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 highway, experiencing a terrifying moment where she felt her life flash before her eyes. South Coast Sun reports that Lulu Smith was driving to Riverhorse Valley when automatic gunfire erupted just after 6:00 AM yesterday. Smith reacted instinctively by slamming on the brakes and ducking under the dashboard as the shots rang out.
In that split second, she was overcome with a chilling premonition, recalling a previous incident where a Richards Bay teacher was tragically struck by stray bullets during a cash-in-transit robbery while on her way to work in November of the previous year. Smith vividly imagined her own funeral and the grief of her loved ones mourning her loss.Peeking over the steering wheel, Smith saw cars ahead performing U-turns, and she followed suit. ALS Paramedics' Garrith Jamieson confirmed that several bystanders were caught in the crossfire during the robbery, including a female pedestrian who tragically lost her life. The guards transporting the money sustained various injuries at the scene but survived. The assailants made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, firing their way out of the scene. It is alleged that they subsequently shot another woman in Chatsworth while attempting to hijack her Mercedes-Benz. Both lanes of the N2 highway between Edwin Swales Drive and Higginson Highway were closed for several hours while police conducted investigations, processed the scene, and interviewed witnesses.Smith expressed immense gratitude for surviving the ordeal unharmed. She shared her heartfelt condolences with the families of those who lost their lives during the robbery, emphasizing that it could have easily been her family. She stated that she genuinely believed and felt she was going to die. Following the robbery, two of the alleged robbers were pursued to Durban. In a gun battle with police, one suspect died, while the other was apprehended and is currently under heavy guard in a hospital. Authorities anticipate that he will appear in court once he is medically fit to stand trial. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda revealed that one of the vehicles used in the heist had been hijacked in KwaMakhutha. He further stated that the suspects have been definitively linked to other criminal activities across the province
