Following on from high-profile appointments who achieved silverware at the peak of their playing careers, new permanent head coach Warne’s name might jar but make no mistake, he is a coup for Derby and fans should be excited.

The 49-year-old has moved to Pride Park along with his backroom staff of assistant head coach Richie Barker, first team coach Matt Hamshaw and goalkeeping coach Andy Warrington as Derby continue their first season in the third tier since 1986.League One promotion three times with Rotherham in five years. Most impressively, he has done it on a budget significantly inferior to the league’s big players on each occasion which, in Derby’s new era under owner David Clowes, is another valuable asset.

It always seemed likely to end this way for Warne and Rotherham, with one outgrowing a very happy relationship. The two were a perfect match and it is a surprise that it has taken this long for another club — ultimately a bigger club — to come in for the manager given his impressive record and reputation.
