Human Rights Watch says the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an independent military force, and allied militias have raped several dozen women and girls in West Darfur's capital and those fleeing fighting. Sexual violence committed in the context of an armed conflict is a war crime, and if part of a widespread or systematic attack can amount to crimes against humanity, the watchdog said. It is calling on the UN Human Rights Council to initiate an investigation and a way to preserve evidence of the abuses, and asked concerned governments to provide more resources for rape survivors. Earlier, Amnesty International (AI) had found that Sudan's warring military factions are committing war crimes as the country is ravaged by more than three months of violence. The conflict killed thousands and displaced 4 million people, who are now living in dire conditions. In April 2022, a power struggle emerged between the leader of the Sudan Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. AI said the conflict has ignited ethnic conflict in the Darfur region, which has seen targeted killings and ethnically motivated attacks conducted by the Rapid Support Force and allied militias.
