For the first time, this new strike will mean some critical care services, such as intensive care, will not be staffed on strike days – a step beyond previous walkouts

. Mr Hartley said: “If this takes place in the way that it’s been described, it would of course present serious risks and challenges for trusts to manage and mitigate.”

He said: “If there is a delay to cancer care, some delays won’t cause significant effects, but there are many people who have been waiting far too long for care and this will only exacerbate that risk. He said: “Everybody will be concerned about the impact of any strike action in the health service but the reality is people are being put at risk every day in our NHS because of the chronic staffing crisis.

Rachel Power, chief executive of the charity, told BBC Breakfast it was frustrating that the Government and unions have not been able to find a solution while “every day patients are waiting for treatments”.
