“Where are you going?” he asked. To Lechlade, we replied. “That’s ambitious,” he offered.
Setting off, I smiled in amusement that it took just over an hour by train to get here from London, and now it would take two weeks to walk back. It was here we met Chris. He too was walking the length of the river. The three of us stood in quiet reflection. His Thames pilgrimage was driven by grief, as his wife recently died from cancer.
The path travels through remote and rural areas of England, including farmer’s fields, where walkers share the trail with animals. The first few days of the Thames route are relatively remote and rural, as it was when we came to Newbridge at the end of our third day. There is an inn and two pubs. And a bridge that isn’t so new. The bridge at Newbridge was built in the 1200s and is the oldest span across the Thames.
We met Jules, and his young daughter in a small park near Wallingford. What began as small talk, led Jules to offer up his canoe, so James, an avid canoeist, could paddle a couple of hours downriver. I continued along the trail on foot and Jules later met us where we agreed to pull the canoe out.Photo by Ken Donohue
