The walk starts 11 a.m. today at the community hall in Millbrook First Nation.
Youth support worker Colin Bernard with wellness co-ordinator Sunshine Bernard. The siblings work for the Millbrook Health Centre and are involved with organizing the local survivors' walk and event for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.MILLBROOK, N.S.
“To hear some stories who lived it, it was kind of like, ‘OK, this was a good thing. People needed this,’” said Sunshine.Millbrook elder tells her Shubenacadie Residential School story: 'I need to talk about the sadness that was there' “I'm glad that it's Alan Syliboy because he's a community member, he's sharing his experience,” said Sunshine.
Colin, who is also on the Mi'kmaq Grand Council, said it is about being who they are as a people, but not forgetting history. Education about what happened is one of the biggest things about having reconciliation, said Sunshine.
