ICYMI: Charlottetown is once again considering implementing a parking rebate program, similar to the one offered in Halifax. If put into place, anyone getting a parking fine could have it voided if they spend the equivalent amount at downtown businesses.

The City of Charlottetown is once again considering implementing a parking rebate program, similar to the one offered in Halifax. If put into place, anyone getting a parking fine could have it voided if they spend the equivalent amount at downtown businesses. - Dave StewartCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The City of Charlottetown plans to talk to downtown business owners soon about a program that would void parking fines.

Mayor Philip Brown, who sits on all committees, said he favours this approach to luring people to do business downtown over offering free parking at times. Brown also said numbers in Halifax showed that people who received, for example, a $35 parking ticket, spent more than double that amount at businesses.

Coun. Kevin Ramsay, who chairs the committee, said the city will have to consider whatever revenue will be lost as a result of voided tickets.
