Several motorists were robbed of their belongings during peak traffic on the M1-M2 split on Tuesday morning.

Tactical director Yaseen Theba told the publication the armed men are believed to be informal miners who reportedly used bridges to avoid capture.“According to reports, they were robbing commuters of their cellphones while motorists were stuck in traffic. Images of the alleged suspects have gone viral, and voice notes from witnesses providing descriptions of the suspects and detailing the robberies are also circulating.

Motorists were urged to be vigilant. Thebo said there has recently been a noticeable increase in highway incidents due to this month’s high temperatures.“These conditions can lead drivers to let down their guard and open their windows under the assumption they are safe on the highway. This makes them more vulnerable to criminal activities. We strongly recommend motorists and passengers stay alert and cautious while in traffic.”Here are ways to prevent smash and grab incidents.

If it’s late at night, slow down well in advance so that the light changes green by the time you reach the intersection.Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape , if anything should happen. Be especially wary whenever you see broken glass lying on the road. If the pieces of glass are still scattered across the road, chances are that a smash and grab occurred just recently.

If you don’t have smash and grab film installed, leave your window open slightly whilst driving. This makes the glass more flexible and more resistant against shattering if they’re struck by a sharp object.
