For Russia, conflict in Ukraine is causing conflict back at home. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, accused top members of the Russian Defense Ministry of “treason', citing poor outcomes in Ukraine among other grievances.
Prigozhin, whose notoriety has grown in recent months as his troops fight in Ukraine, accused top Russian defense leaders of attempting to destroy his organization in a recording released on Tuesday by his press service on Telegram. The Wagner boss has no official position, though he has continued to clash with Russian Ministry of Defense officials over the poor outcomes in Ukraine.
The Wagner leader alleged that his troops do not have the same supplies as Russian forces, while his comments further demonstrate an apparent rift between Prigozhin and Russian military leaders, including Shoigu. “Wagner PMCs do not have ammunition. Why do the rest of the units also have a constant shortage of ammunition? A handful of military functionaries decided that this is their country, their people, who decided that these people would die when it suits them,” he said.
“There is direct opposition, which is called nothing more than an attempt to destroy PMCs," he added. “This can be equated to high treason now when Wagner PMC are fighting for Bakhmut, losing hundreds of their fighters every day.
The administration also announced a slew of new sanctions against the Wagner Group and designated it as a"transnational criminal organization."
