The compensation deal, which amount is not yet known, is just part of the €30bn the diesel emissions scandal has cost VW worldwide
An important chapter in Volkswagen’s years-long “dieselgate” emissions cheating saga appeared to be headed for a close on Friday, as the German car giant agreed a compensation deal with domestic consumer groups.
Friday’s announcement follows just two weeks after the two sides fell out in public after agreeing in principle on €830m in payouts for German diesel car drivers. VW said at the time that the talks failed because of “disproportionate” fee demands from the VZBV’s lawyers. While American diesel buyers enjoyed generous buyback and compensation schemes, German drivers have so far gone uncompensated for the impact of the scandal, which has since spread to other carmakers.
