Residents of Mohave County who may be worried about a vulnerable loved one wandering off can now get assistance through the new Take Me Home program from the Sheriff's Office.
What eventually became a four-year process to implement the new program was in part motivated by the 2018 death of an 8-year-old autistic boy whose body was recovered from the Colorado River after wandering from his Bullhead City home a day earlier. The program is free to any Mohave County resident who may have trouble communicating and is particularly aimed at individuals who may be at increased risk of wandering including those with autism, Down syndrome and other cognitive or developmental disabilities, like seniors suffering from dementia.
All of the information in the database will remain confidential and be maintained by the MCSO and can only be accessed by law enforcement. If law enforcement finds someone who cannot communicate where they live, they can search the database by description and return the person to their loved ones. The system also works in reverse — if someone goes missing, their picture and description are immediately available to responding law enforcement.
