“A re-elected UCP government will get Calgary’s event centre built without putting a nickel into the arena itself,” he said. “The project will result in billions of dollars of economic activity, create new jobs and ensure a vibrant downtown and Rivers District.”
“The arena is an exciting opportunity for Calgary and for downtown revitalization,” said Malissa Dunphy, a spokeswoman for the Alberta NDP. “The cost has doubled in the last 18 months, and the ask of taxpayers has tripled.” Edmonton was most strongly opposed to provincial funds going to the deal, with 62 per cent saying no versus 25 per cent in favour — 71 per cent of Edmontonians pointed to zero provincial dollars for the construction of that city’s Rogers Place, which opened in 2016. “On the other hand,” he said, “people are kind of loathe for the government to support the, quote-unquote, billionaire sports owners who own these teams.”
