VLC Media Player celebrates 6 billion downloads, while exploring new features powered by AI. The latest development involves testing automatically generated subtitles, promising offline accessibility and potential improvements to user experience.

\This milestone is a testament to VLC’s impact as the most beloved open-source media player, trusted by hundreds of millions of users everywhere in the world, thanks to our amazing community of developers, contributors, and users,” shared VideoLAN president Jean-Baptiste Kempf in a statement. \VideoLAN is testing out automatically generated subtitles in VLC powered by AI, although it is unclear what kind of model or platform the company is using to do said tests, it has explained that the feature would leverage the open-source AI running locally on the device in question. As such, this is a feature that will not necessarily be used by many when it is eventually made available, especially as a list of partners or models has not been shared at this stage. That said, it means that internet connectivity would not be a requirement in order to access the feature, so there is some advantage there. Other details on the feature have not been firmed up either, as there is no indication of which languages will be supported at launch, nor when VideoLAN plans to roll out support for AI-generated subtitles in an update. Either way, having surpassed a significant milestone, VideoLAN is still looking at ways to improve its media player, with AI being the answer right now
