Vikings to waive QB Kellen Mond, who was drafted a pick ahead of Texans' Davis Mills
Sixteen months later, Mills is the Texans starting quarterback and Mond is looking for a new team. The Vikings are waiving their third-round pick as part of Tuesday's final roster cuts, according toMond appeared in just one game as a rookie, completing 2 of 3 passes for five yards in a late-season blowout loss to the Packers in a game Sean Mannion started at quarterback for the Vikings after usual starter Kirk Cousins was placed on the COVID list.
Mond was 29-for-51 for 303 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions this preseason, though he had a particularly discouraging performance against the 49ers in the second preseason game when he completed 10 of 20 passes for 82 yards with a pair of interceptions. Things got dicey for Mond last week when the Vikings traded for the Raiders' Nick Mullen to serve as Cousins' backup.as a rookie and the 23-year-old has been handed the keys to the Texans offense as the franchise tries to figure out if he'll be the team's quarterback of the future.
There were seven quarterbacks taken ahead of Mills in the 2021 draft, including five in the first round - Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence, Jets' Zach Wilson, 49ers' Trey Lance, Bears' Justin Fields and Patriots' Mac Jones. Only Lawrence, Wilson and Jones started more games than Mills as a rookie.
