Cousins, who will be eligible for free agency this season, hopped to the Vikings’ bench after being injured during the fourth quarter of their win at Green Bay.

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is helped off the field after being injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, who was having a highly productive season to put himself into position to sign another lucrative contract in free agency in the offseason, suffered what the Minnesota Vikings fear is a torn Achilles’ tendon in his right leg during Sunday’s victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

“He’s being evaluated and will be into tomorrow,” Vikings Coach Kevin O’Connell said in his postgame news conference. “We are fearing an Achilles injury. The severity of that, I do not know at this point. But I know that’s what our fear is in the moment and we’ll confirm that as soon as possible.”Cousins would be the second prominent NFL quarterback to suffer a torn Achilles’ tendon this season.

Cousins completed 23 of 31 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns Sunday before being injured. Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall finished the game for the Vikings. They have won three straight games to even their record at 4-4. They’re back in contention for a playoff spot even as they play without star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who is on the injured reserve list because of a hamstring injury.

“It is not an easy place to come get a road victory in the NFC North, at Lambeau Field,” O’Connell said. “I thought the defensive performance was phenomenal. Gave that whole side of the ball and the coaching staff game balls.”There had been some speculation that Cousins might be traded before Tuesday’s deadline. That was unlikely, especially since he has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Cousins never has missed a game due to injury in his NFL career. He missed a game during the 2021 season under the NFL’s coronavirus protocols.
