As good as Asamoah is against the run, rounding his game into form as an asset in coverage, rather than just a body in space, is a facet of his skill set that should allow him to thrive as he moves into the meat of his career. For Minnesota, they simply weren’t good enough on the defensive side of the football in 2022.
Every elite defense starts with the bodies at linebacker. San Francisco, Buffalo, the tandem of Willie Gay and Nick Bolton in Kansas City, it starts at the second level. Athletes that are asked to relay looks, tout unique alignment versatility, work downhill, flip and run… folks, it’s not easy to play linebacker in today’s game.
presented me with an entirely different appreciation for the type of stalwart he could be at the next level, and now with the Vikings. In an atmosphere in Mobile that breeds competition in the one-on-one and seven-on-seven portions in which both pass-catchers and defenders in coverage have nowhere to hide, Asamoah consistently found himself near the ball with an excellent ability to identify route stems and offensive concepts.
With experience at all three spots within the core of a defense during his time in Norman, a scheme-versatile talent like the rocked-up Asamoah should become a staple of the purple and gold’s, hopefully, much-improved unit in 2023. Although an increased snap count didn’t come until the latter portions of his rookie campaign, year two should see him start from Week 1 onward. I expect Brian Asamoah’s game to take off.
