A vigorous cold front is making its way across Victoria, bringing useful rain to large areas of the state including up to 35mm in parts of Melbourne.

Steady falls are expected to start in Melbourne around 10:00pm, with some suburbs likely to receive up to 35 millimetres.Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the rain was moving from Victoria's west and would"stagnate" overnight around central Victoria, including Melbourne. "We're likely to see good rainfall over the next 24 hours that should make it a fairly wet May so far."

"This bad weather that's forecast should be a prompt for all drivers to slow down and use extreme caution," spokesman Chris Miller said.
