Clay Elliott torches a felt cowboy hat to clean up fibres and smooth its texture at Gold Spring Custom Hats, a Nanton-area business founded by his father, Vern Elliott. Both father and son were rodeo competitors, hitting the Calgary Stampede at various times. Clay — a three-time NFR qualifier and two-time Canadian Champion — committed to the craft of hat-making after breaking his neck in competition a few years ago.
