The video shows a brief, fraught struggle as Alegria-Hurtado flailed about with a knife before a police officer responding to a 911 call fired a single shot at close range.The shooting is being investigated under New Jersey’s independent prosecutor law, which requires all fatal encounters between police and the public be handled by the state Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
The video begins with the officers arriving at the scene and knocking on one of three doors on the porch of the multifamily unit. Faint yelling can be heard in the background as one of the officers opens the door and enters, yelling “Police!” Lazo turns the corner and fires a single shot, bringing the commotion to an abrupt halt as Alegria-Hurtado slumps to the floor.“Stay down! Stay down” an officer yells. “Where’s the knife?”
