Killer whales, which frequently hunt in packs, attacked and feasted on Risso dolphins Saturday about 30 miles west of La Jolla
NOAA says there are about 2,500 of these whales in the eastern North Pacific, which includes the waters off California.
They’re widely recognized by the public because of the distinct black-and-white pattern on their bodies. But people rarely see the whales close-up because they often travel far from shore. It’s even less common to see orcas, as they’re also known, hunting on prey as a group. These animals are the largest members of the dolphin family. Adult males can grow up to 27 feet in length. Adult females can reach about 23 feet.
Various movies have made it seem like its common for killer whales to attack humans in the wild. But such attacks are quite rare.
