Dame Vera Baird criticised the government for letting down rape, burglary, theft and attempted murder victims in her resignation letter
Dame Vera, a former Labour MP, solicitor general and Northumbria police and crime commissioner, was appointed to the independent role aimed at championing victims in 2019 under Theresa May's government - whom she thanked, as well as then-justice secretary David Gauke.
Dame Vera added that Mr Raab did not meet with her once since February, when she was first told to reapply, and her vital access to ministers was curtailed."The lack of engagement from the top at a time of great upheaval for victims reflected poorly on the Ministry of Justice's priorities and the government's approach," she said.
Dame Vera said she had been integral in shining a spotlight"on the dire state of rape investigations and prosecutions" and secured safeguards against"excessive requests" for victims' mobile phone data in rape investigations. The commissioner urged the government to reaffirm the government's commitment to increase their"shamefully low charging rates".
