But the systemic problem of violence against women in South Africa is just that — systemic. Despite these laws, I know I’m still too scared to walk the streets alone. Another time, I had a meal with a close male friend at a restaurant. When we were leaving, another teacher saw me and confronted me, telling me that I shouldn’t be walking alone with him because I was making myself vulnerable to sexual violence. I was holding a bottle of water, which my teacher grabbed out of my hand to taste, convinced it was alcohol.
The second time I was alone was when I went to the mall to meet my friends. They were late, so I waited for them alone on a bench. A middle-aged man sat down next to me, put his hand on my thigh, and asked me if I'd go out with him the following weekend. I told him that I'd meet him in that spot next weekend, but that I had to go. Of course, I never met him there.
