High school basketball: Veterans Memorial tops Wagner for 21st straight win

Wagner’s Jaylon Crittendon scores against Veterans Memorial’s Zackery Rygg during Tuesday’s game at Veterans Memorial High School. The Patriots defeated the Thunderbirds, 60-50.In a battle of District 26-5A heavyweights Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial, the Wagner Thunderbirds landed their best punches against the Patriots in the second half and took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter on Veterans' home court.

“Our team played hard tonight,” said Veterans Memorial head coach Steven Perez. “These games are the ones where it takes a championship effort if you're going to win. Winning tonight means a lot just because it's another district win and to be 4-0 in this district is a big thing.” Veterans Memorial kept Wagner off-balance for most of the night, scoring the game's first eight points and leading 20-12 after the opening quarter. The Patriots led by as many as 10 in the second period before settling for a 35-27 halftime advantage.

But after a 3-pointer by Davonte Durst gave Wagner a 46-45 lead with 7:06 to go, Veterans Memorial scored the next 11 points to take a 56-46 lead the Patriots wouldn’t relinquish.
