Wife. Veteran. Volunteer. Letter writer. Born Oct. 5, 1921, in Quebec City; died Nov. 11, 2022, in Fredericton, of natural causes; aged 101

Growing up in the Depression prepared Laurie Theobald for hardship. Her father’s four-day workweek couldn’t cover expenses when her mother was hospitalized with tuberculosis when Laurie was a child. Donations and loans from church members covered the shortfall. Hand-me-downs and made-over clothes were Laurie’s wardrobe, including, to her mortification, a pair of her uncle’s pants, complete with a fly. Longed-for roller skates – 60 cents at Woolworths – were out of reach.

On his departure, she enlisted with the Women’s Division of the RCAF, in hopes of being posted overseas. Instead, while Gordon flew bombing raids in the Far East, she tracked aircraft from her post on Vancouver Island. At the war’s end, she sailed to Britain, a reverse war bride, to make a new life in that devastated country.

As the wife of a successful executive, Laurie became adept at resettling her family, from one coast to another, and then to the United States. Her address book grew fat, and she wrote letters to family and friends on a green Olympia typewriter, then a word processor, and finally, via e-mail. Wherever she went, she volunteered through church and the cancer society. For Laurie, Freedom 55 meant turning volunteerism into a 20-year professional career with the Cancer Society.
