Morgan Stewart's cat Princess Kitty died of what she believes was a respiratory disease. The cat was sick for three weeks, but despite all her attempts, Stewart wasn't able to find a vet to provide care for her.About two weeks before Christmas, Morgan Stewart’s cat, Princess Kitty, started to exhibit signs of a respiratory infection. The cat had black eye discharge and her breathing was abnormal.

“I even offered to pay for the exam,” Stewart said. “I offered to pay double for the exam just to get the medication. ‘I don't even need the exam. Just please let me try the medication.’ I tried everything.” The best she’s been able to manage within Pictou County is getting on a waitlist for the boosters, but there’s no guarantee on when that will happen. And once that is done, she will have to wait again to get one of them fixed.

Given the current situation, Johnson said in emergencies, pet owners may have to go beyond Pictou County to larger city centres such as Halifax or Moncton where there are 24/7 emergency clinics. “It kind of warms my heart a little bit, that everybody wants to be home with a pet,” Corkum said. “There's such a strong human/animal bond, but I think it has put a little bit more pressure on veterinary clinics and probably every animal-associated business or profession.”Corkum believes the higher frequency of veterinary visits may have to do with pet owners being home more so they’re detecting problems sooner.
