Red Bull’s Verstappen was given a one-place grid penalty for blocking Russell, with the British driver starting on pole instead of the Dutchman. The penalty came hours after Verstappen initially claimed his first pole position in five months, but a stewards' investigation found he had driven unnecessarily slowly, which pushed Russell into the gravel.
Russell criticized the maneuver, calling it 'super-dangerous.' McLaren’s Lando Norris remained in third place, with Oscar Piastri, Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top six. Hamilton remarked that he 'doesn’t really care,' looking forward to the winter break. The race finished with Russell leading, surpassing Verstappen's time in the final laps
