A VC reveals why startups like Depop that target Gen Z shoppers are what investors are eyeing right now
Though Depop is not in Wu's portfolio, she said she recognizes the company's success in tapping into the wants and needs of Gen Z. For example, Gen Z's tendency to be more entrepreneurial, tuned into current culture, and more environmentally-conscious than generational predecessors makes the peer-to-peer shopping app perfect for that class of consumer. "They want to build their own unique online identity," Wu said of Gen Z.
"We have an amazing community of creative sellers and creatively-inspired buyers — and many people that are both — who come to Depop for unique, rare items," Semple said. "Depop is also the place where they want to buy second-hand clothing to lessen their environmental impact or simply because they're excited to buy from and sell to people they share values with."
