“(In Maple Ridge) we are taking the initiative, we are taking provincial land, we are building modular housing, we want to close down the tent city in Maple Ridge as we did in Nanaimo, as we …
VICTORIA — Maple Ridge has lately been the scene of angry protests over the NDP government decision to proceed with a 51-unit modular housing project for the homeless over objections from local residents.
The 30-point plan is heavy on tax increases and other measures to drive down demand. On supply, the plan is lighter and mostly committed to sweet talk. In the case of Maple Ridge, where Mayor Mike Morden drew several hundred people out to a protest rally last weekend, Horgan has run out of patience.“Mayor Morden, it seems, has adopted the position that he would prefer to have a homeless camp than modular housing,” said Horgan.
The premier was asked about the North Van situation last week and again this week. But doesn’t appear to see it as a trend at this point. He’d prefer it be accomplished through co-operation: “We’re going to also work as much as we can with local representatives to make sure that can happen. But in the case of Maple Ridge, the obstruction was beyond what I believe to be reasonable.”“The challenge is some municipal councils want to have it both ways,” he conceded Thursday.
What if local government balks at provincial priorities on housing while still wanting the province to pay for the transit?
