Opinion: Faced with intractable issues, any premier is tempted to call an election when polls look favourable
“In my conversations with British Columbians, it is already clear to me that that is the last thing they want right now,” he told Katie DeRosa of The Vancouver Sun on the day he announced.
Bottom line commitment from Eby in those first few days of his leadership campaign: “I have no plans for a snap election, and we’ll be working to deliver for British Columbians until the fixed election date.”Article content But even if one believes that Eby has “no plans” for a snap election, one can readily imagine circumstances where he would decide not to wait another two years for an election.
Throw in random attacks and chronic offenders, the never-ending tragedy of drug overdoses, the stand off between the government and public sector unions, and the impact of rising interest rates. Many of those challenges resist easy solutions. Even with the best of intentions, there’s every chance they will get worse before they get better.Article content
The recent entry of challenger Anjali Appadurai means the leadership race will continue until the result is announced on Dec. 3.In that scenario, Eby would make over the cabinet in December, promoting newcomers from the backbench and moving current ministers to put a new face on the government. In the event of an earlier vote, a half dozen ministers and eight backbenchers would have their pensions hanging in the balance. But a determined premier with the opinion polls at his back could brush aside the pension concerns and go in the spring. One factor that would not give Eby pause is people telling pollsters they don’t want an early election.Article contentThe premier disregarded them as he did the election date his own government wrote into legislation.
