Folks in the northeast have their doubts. “Caribou consultations: Are they already a foregone conclusion?” as the headline in the Dawson Creek Mirror put it last week.
VICTORIA — The NDP government’s rush-job consultations on a caribou protection plan have generated protests among northeast residents fearing for jobs and feeling left out of the process.
Several of those sessions took place in the Peace River country last week, and by all accounts, they mainly served to raise the level of alienation and alarm. “Do you know what would happen if I asked that question in Downtown Vancouver?” he said as a followup. That set the tone for a “heated night,” according to the report by Austin Cozicar in the Dawson Creek Mirror.
West Fraser general manager Roger Roy told the Chetwynd meeting that the reduction in the cut will mean the loss of one mill and 500 jobs. Taking much the same tack regarding the draft agreement for the northeast and one covering other parts of the province is Donaldson. He defends the plans as a necessary provincial response to Ottawa last May declaring an “imminent threat status” under the Federal Species at Risk Act regarding B.C.’s southern mountain caribou population.
