Opinion: Could B.C.'s midway stand on Ottawa's environmental law appeal to Canada's high court?

Environment Minister George Heyman found much to admire in the federal law, citing similarities to the provincial NDP government’s own upgrade to the environmental assessment process in B.C.

He predicted the common ground would make it easier for the two levels of government to agree on the principles for joint review of major projects. “We have common objectives: advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, enhancing the public confidence in the assessment process and ensuring that projects proceed in a timely way while protecting the environment.”

She urged major amendments to curb the leeway of federal regulators and better respect provincial jurisdiction. B.C., at most, saw merit only in “tinkering” with the timelines in the bill. “She’s not his friend,” an angry Notley staffer fired back, making it the first recorded case of one premier “unfriending” another, social-media style.
