Who better than Joy MacPhail to preside over what looks to me like an expensive hit job on B.C. Ferries\u0027 CEO Mark Collins.

Collins was about halfway through a six-year contract that pays him in the range of $600,000 a year. Presuming two years’ severance, the decision by the ferries’ board would cost the corporation more than $1 million.

Still, the New Democrats argued that the company should eat the losses rather than lay anyone off. The layoffs were rescinded under pressure. On June 20, the cabinet-appointed board of the overseer B.C. Ferry Authority named a new lineup of directors to B.C. Ferries. The group included MacPhail and five others, enough to ensure a majority on the ferries’ board.Article content

His interim replacement as CEO is Jill Sharland, vice-president and CFO at the ferry corporation. The news release said “a robust and professional search to select the company’s permanent CEO will soon be launched.” The new leadership is expected to revisit the current $1.2 billion plan to build seven new ships for the main routes between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The New Democrats have repeatedly signalled a preference for building new ships in B.C., never mind that B.C.

The release announcing her appointment listed considerable experience: five years as chairwoman of ICBC, directorships at Delta Hotels and SilverBirch Hotels, chairwoman of the federal-provincial expert panel on housing and member of the Order of Canada. Those details precipitated some grumbling that she didn’t know anything about ferries.
