Over the years, some mayors, councillors have expressed relief that creation of the land commission freed local governments from pressure.

The creation of the reserve and the commission marked a fundamental shift in the relationship between the provincial and local governments over the disposition of agricultural land. The fate of agricultural land was strictly in the hands of the commission, which had a mandate to preserve and protect, not convert and subvert the reserve.
Vancouver city council asked the province to intervene and use its legislative powers to derail a court challenge by local residents opposed to the Arbutus project.
