Vaughan Gething has been chosen as the new First Minister of Wales, making him the first black person to lead a European country. He won the Welsh Labour leadership election with 51.7% of the votes against Jeremy Miles. Gething will officially assume office on Wednesday after a vote in the Senedd.

Welsh Labour members voted for the 49-year-old to take over from Mark Drakeford, who's been in charge since 2018. Mr Gething won against Jeremy Miles, the education minister, with 51.7% of the votes. Welsh Labour shared Gething got more votes than Jeremy Miles, who got 48.3%. Out of all the members, 57.
8% voted and 9.4% of affiliates did too, which means 16.1% of people voted altogether. Mr Gething, who looks after the economy now, is going to be named the fifth leader of the country since the Welsh government started in 1999. They told everyone he was the new leader on Saturday morning at Cardiff University. But he'll only start being the first minister on Wednesday when they have a vote in the Senedd.
