David Cohen, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, says efforts are underway between the two trading partners to fix the issue.

Supply chain bottlenecks — and the effect of strong consumer demand — continue to affect North American businesses, consumers and the economy, more than 28 months after the COVID-19 crisis first arrived.

“We are talking to each other about them. We are trying to address the causes of the supply chain issues. We’re trying to improve the security of our supply chains,” Cohen said in an interview.The ambassador, who also spoke last week in Calgary at the annual Pacific NorthWest Economic Region conference and, said one sore spot is tied to “structural infrastructure-based” issues.

The two countries are seeking to individually map logistic networks and have identified key areas for collaboration, including electric vehicles and batteries, critical minerals, information technologies and regulatory co-operation, along with transportation and logistics.This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Companies face backlogs to secure goods they need — such as steel or cement — with delays often cascading down the line, from one supplier to the next.

Adding to the complexity are labour shortages in North America and the reverberations of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on global energy markets.
