Vanier cenotaph vandalized, but some say graffiti expressed grief not disrespect ottnews ottawa
Henry McCambridge, third vice-president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 462, stares at graffiti on the Eastview City Cenotaph in Vanier on Aug. 5, 2022. He is upset over the vandalism.
"This is sacred ground," explained Henry McCambridge, third vice-president with the branch. He described those who defaced the site as "snotty-nosed little pups." Residents shared that Alexis was the name of a woman who spent time at the small park that surrounds the memorial. They said she had a kind heart, but struggled at times.
A memorial dedicated solely to Alexis can be found a short drive from the cenotaph, where Marier Avenue meets Montreal Road. The Vanier BIA, which represents hundreds of properties and business owners in the area, arranged to have the cenotaph cleaned off on Friday afternoon.
