Piano prodigy off to Texas to take on the world's teenage keyboard virtuosos
Ryan Zhu, 15, won’t be playing any compositions by living English composer Chris Roe when he heads to Dallas for an international youth music competition at the end of May, but Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D-minor is on the menu.
“It’s the art of control, how much you can channel it to bring your music to a higher level of artistry and maturity.” The Cliburn is named after the late Van Cliburn, a lanky Texan who stunned the classical music world by winning the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition as a 23-year-old in 1958.
Zhu has played the halls at Carnegie in New York, the Colburn School in Los Angeles and, at home, the Chan Centre and Orpheum. The Cilburn, based in Fort Worth, will hold the first stage of it’s junior competition at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and then at the Meyerson Centre, home of the Dallas Symphony.
