Vancouver mayor gets no responses from letters sent to 'Big Oil'
On Aug. 14, 2019 – at the request of council – Stewart sent letters to the world’s largest producers of oil asking that they explain how they are going to transition their business model to “adjust to a global economy that limits global warming to 1.5 degrees.”
The letter stated that the city was expecting to pay $1 billion between now and 2100 toward climate-change related incidents. Since then letter was sent the city was hit with a storm surge in November 2021 that left a barge on English Bay and also damaged the Kitsilano Pool.Article content The letter states, “city council passed a resolution calling on the provincial and federal governments to enact legislation holding fossil fuel companies liable for climate-related harms caused by their contribution to climate change.”
