A delegation of BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning U.K. animation studios arrive in Vancouver for the first Animation FAM (familiarization) Tour as local industry continues booming.

Where: Vancouver Convention Centre East, Ballrooms A, B and C, 999 Canada Pl.Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film means even more global focus is turned toward Vancouver’s digital entertainment sector. The oft-reported pace of growth in film, TV, animation, VFX and gaming business in B.C. is indeed exceptional. Oscar love for locally based Sony Pictures Imageworks means even more business.

First up is the first Animation FAM Tour in the city’s history March 13-17, which sees representatives from such U.K. studios as Axis Animation ; Lupus Films ; and Jellyfish Pictures coming to Vancouver for a look around. This is the first outbound trip Film London has taken in five years. Shepheard previously was involved in the inbound versions of these FAM events.

One of the biggest worries is that there won’t be enough labour to meet the demands of all that business. Part of the VEC strategy is to keep the talent base building. VEC animation and VFX expert Nancy Basi says that’s where the career fair comes in. The 8th Annual Vancouver Digital Entertainment Career Fair takes place in April, and is the largest event of its kind in North America. With three dozen or more studios participating, the fair is expecting to see 3,500-plus jobseekers show up.

Colin Giles, head of animation at the Vancouver Film School, says the pressure is on to produce talent for the local industry. He also echoes Shepheard and Basi’s points about requiring the participation of multiple components to keep growing the business and stave off competition.
