The Valero Texas Open field includes just 12 players already qualified to the Masters, with the rest aiming to follow the path of returning champion J.J. Spaun.
Beau Hossler putts during Sunday's final round of the Valero Texas Open at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course. After winning last year's Valero Texas Open, J.J. Spaun felt he finally understood the concept of a “pinch me” moment, or the feeling of living in a dream.
Stepping onto a PGA Tour site as a defending champion for the first time in his career, Spaun sees a field of players seeking to follow his path, knowing the Texas Open competition Thursday through Sunday at TPC San Antonio is their final chance to earn entry to the year’s first major. Conners is one of just 12 players in the Texas Open field who has already secured a spot in the Masters.
Spaun understands why some players might want to skip the Texas Open, noting that also playing both the Masters and last week’s World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play event could create a challenging three-week swing. But he’s also seen from experience the value of carrying strong play into a critical moment.
With six top-20 showings and three top-10 results through his first 11 events of the season, Fowler is displaying flashes of a career resurgence at age 34 as he attempts to reach the Masters for the first time since 2020.
