Local councillor Brian Kerr wrote a court reference for a taxi driver jailed for assaulting his ex-wife. It can now be revealed
Brian Kerr, a candidate for the party in next year's council elections, said in his letter that Thompson Beckett had made a "positive difference to the community during the Covid crisis".
Women's Aid earlier this month criticised the letter, but Mr Kerr said he gave "statements of facts, not statements of support". In his typed letter which included Listening Ear's logo and address, Mr Kerr said Beckett had been a volunteer with the charity for two years. "Each time Listening Ear has contacted Mr Beckett he has always answered the call and supported and assisted the community. Beckett was arrested in October 2020 after turning up outside his ex-wife's home at Dunanney Avenue in the Rathcoole estate. He said the letter was submitted at the request of the defendant's family and provided "statements of facts, not statements of support".
