Andy Carroll was sent for an early bath for a pair of 'stupid' tackles

Reading went on to lose the tie 3-1, with Carroll in the changing room for the closing stages. The former England striker has seemingly found a new home with the Royals, recovering an injury plagued career to become a regular for Paul Ince’s side.

That reliability wasn’t on show in the cup though, with Carroll having a horrible night back playing against Premier League opposition. Formerly of Liverpool, West Ham and Newcastle, it wasn’t long ago that trips to such big teams were a regular occurrence for the 34-year-old.After picking up an unnecessary yellow by the corner flag on the hour mark, Carroll then went flying in on Casemiro. The Brazilian knew what was coming, shifted the ball away, and braced for impact, leaving referee Darren England with no choice.

“Utter, utter stupidity from Andy Carroll and a well deserved second yellow card,” said talkSPORT commentator Adam Bridge.Sunderland legend Micky Gray added: “He’s got no right to go to ground, the ball was gone.
