A committee tasked in 2018 with looking into the past of one of the building’s namesakes found no evidence to warrant changes, officials said.

The Progressive Student Union holds a rally to demand the removal of former university president E.H. Hereford’s name from the University Center and a bust on the campus of The University of Texas at Arlington, Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022 in Arlington, Texas. Hereford served as dean and president of the university in the 1940’s and 1950’s and oversaw the adoption of the Confederate battle flag as a school symbol.

“Additionally, the task force did not find any evidence of any racial bias or prejudice in any of President Hereford’s correspondence, public speeches or administrative decisions,” he said. The protest comes as colleges across the country face pressures to confront and address their racist past. “I think there are legitimate questions about maybe these aren’t the icons that we want to have,” Milson said. “Maybe these icons represent a very narrow view of one group of people who had power at that particular point in time.”

Such emblems included flying the Rebel flag on campus and during events; playing “Dixie,” a racially charged song, during games; and celebrations that included slave auctions or minstrel shows with students in blackface.
