Surprise, heartbreak and shock. Those were the words used by Utah State University political science professor Austin Knuppe to describe what’s unfolding in-and-around Israel.

“Hamas starts in the late 1980s. It's an Islamic resistance movement committed to the liberation of Palestine, though it is an Islamist movement that sees a natural connection between Islam and politics,” said Knuppe, when asked about the important differences to note between Hamas and Palestinian citizens. “They have an armed wing, a violent terrorist organization associated with them, though Hamas came to power democratically in an election in 2006.

Israel has fielded attacks from the north as well. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah out of Southern Lebanon has also attacked Israel in recent days. Knuppe spoke at length about the resources that Hamas has and how the United States fits into the mix in the region.
