According to the warning, UAB is being cited for inadequate veterinarian care.

, UAB is being cited for inadequate veterinarian care, allowing three ferrets to die, five others to be injured after being exposed to cigarette smoke while their supply of oxygen was obstructed due to a build up of tar residue, and letting a ferret go without water so long that, when it finally got water, it drank for three straight minutes.

PETA previously filed a complaint against the university after an annual inspection reported similar concerns. PETA’s Vice President of Laboratory Investigations, Dr. Alka Chadna, says as far as PETA is aware, this is the first warning the USDA has given the university. She said the university needs to clean up it’s act and can expect increased inspections moving forward and could face civil penalties or criminal charges if future violations are found.

“The minimum that is required by law, UAB is not doing,” Chadna said. “This is a very wealthy university. In many regards, it’s a very prestigious university. Many of it’s programs are top notch but, when it comes to its animal laboratories, this is a black mark on the university’s reputation.”UAB’s highly trained researchers work with animals to advance science and medicine. One of their chief responsibilities is the respectful and humane treatment of animals.
