President Biden said Wednesday the US will boost its long-term military presence in Europe to counter the threat of Russian expansion — including creating a permanent headquarters for American troops in Poland.. “We’re stepping up, proving that NATO is more needed now than it ever has been and important it ever has been.”

All told, the White House said, Biden’s commitments mean the US will maintain a presence of 100,000 troops in Europe, up 20,000 from the levels before Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, for the “foreseeable future.” During the Cold War, roughly 300,000 American troops, on average, were stationed in the region.NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanks President Biden for the “unwavering support from you and from the United States to Ukraine.
