Officials delay presidential primaries for US state of Georgia over coronavirus fears, a day after Louisiana also pushed back its primaries

A person wears a face mask during the global outbreak of coronavirus in Pasadena, California, US, on March 14, 2020.

The move comes just a day after four other states – Florida, Ohio, Illinois and Arizona – said they would go ahead with their votes, which are scheduled for next week. "Events are moving rapidly and my highest priority is protecting the health of our poll workers, their families, and the community at large," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement announcing the postponement.

Voters who have already cast their ballots via early voting will be able to recast their vote in the May 19 primary, she said. Stacey Abrams, a Georgia Democrat who nearly defeated Kemp for the governorship in mid-term elections in 2018, what would have been a major coup in the deeply red state, has been floated as a potential vice presidential pick.
