The US said that a ceasefire is expected to begin on Tuesday - but previous attempts broke down
With the main airport occupied by armed groups, disparate and haphazard evacuation efforts have seen some diplomats airlifted from the outskirts of the city – while many foreign civilians have been left to make a perilous days-long journey across military checkpoints and conflict zones to Port Sudan on the Red Sea, where rescue vessels and ferries are able to help evacuees.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the violence in a country that flanks the Red Sea, Horn of Africa and Sahel regions “risks a catastrophic conflagration… that could engulf the whole region and beyond”. Facing attacks, aid organisations were among those withdrawing staff, and the World Food Programme suspended its food distribution mission, one of the largest in the world.Tens of thousands of people are reportedly fleeing across the border from the Darfur region in western Sudan into Chad, which is already hosting over 400,000 Sudanese refugees.
Since the conflict began, the International Rescue Committee has reported that an estimated 15,000 people have arrived from Sudan into Chad.
